You talked. We listened. Three Critical Lessons From Our Survey.

Thank you

for responding to our survey regarding your interests and impediments to board development. We learned of your needs, your constraints, and how we might support you. We are on it! Here are your suggestions and our plans and free resources for you.

Firstly, respondents were divided almost evenly divided among Executive Directors/Chief Executive Officers, Board Chairs and Members.

Within your organizations, the view of board development varies from essential and invested in regularly, to a known need but not a priority to, well, it just never even comes up.

And, no surprise here, the greatest impediments to participation in board orientation and training by a third party (like Better Boards. Better Communities.) are time, cost and in some cases, just lack of interest. Some Executive Directors and Chairs expressed disappointment in the lack of interest and indeed lack of knowledge of what is needed to be an effective board member.

Responsibility for board development is pretty much evenly shared among Executive Directors and Board Chairs, with a few using outside consultants, for example, from a state or provincial agency.

And what could we provide?

Well, you spoke and we are responding!

Our weekly blog, Governance as Leadership, proves to be popular (and growing!). So it will continue.

Free webinars on specific topics. We started free monthly webinars last year and will continue them. If you have specific interests just let us know!

And free downloadable resources and tools. This is something that we have been considering for some time. So, to that end, we are opening next week our curated collection of resources by topic for you to access. Watch for details!

And what type of offer would be most attractive for your board?

You spoke and we responded!

Members can sign up for training courses individually. And of course, this has been and continues to be available to you.

A single fee for unlimited registrations in The Board Leader Academy (to help CEOs, Chairs, and Executive Directors have a more significant impact). This has now been implemented!

A yearly membership for unlimited access to training courses from Better Board Better Communities. This has now been implemented!

A complimentary training session for your board with Ken Haycock, followed by the option to register for additional training. We have not yet done this but ask, and we will make it happen!

You provided us with wonderful guidance and we look forward to working to meet our needs. And of course, we promised a “winner” with access to free training for their board for the entire year!

Thanks to Sharon Uteck, Vice Chair of Chinook Regional Library (Alberta) who provided many thoughtful and useful suggestions – and was picked at random regardless!

What are your main “pain points” dealing with board development?

What advice would be most helpful to you?
And we always assume that you are asking for a friend!
