You might be thinking . . .
"We have a great chair. We don’t need more training."
Exceptional chairs are rare beasts and should be treasured. Exceptional chairs also become problematic when the torch does not get passed on a regular schedule. Great chairs prepare others to lead and to succeed, both in terms of success and succession. This program is designed to support that process.
"Everything is going well. We have no issues."
As we say at Better Boards. Better Communities. – you don’t have to be sick to get better. High-performing boards recognize the need for continual learning and improvement by individual board members and by the board as a whole. New perspectives and different approaches are not always apparent without sufficient exposure.
"Our Chief Executive Officer provides sufficient direction and leadership."
Excellent! You should be grateful. But you also need to realize that there is a bit of a paradox when your employee is directing the Board. You are not an advisory committee to the Chief Executive Officer. You are the employer, exercising governance as leadership on behalf of your community, however defined. Make the partnership equal – learn from outside the organization as well as from within.
"We can’t afford the cost."
The price is what Chief Executive Officers and Executive Directors told us was appropriate for even small organizations. And, isn’t it odd that the Board, as the overarching leader and employer, funds the professional and staff development of employees but cannot afford to invest in itself?
